Sparkly Pencil Licence - Foundation & Key Stage 1

Children in Foundation and KS1 are expected to write in HB pencil. In KS2 when a teacher considers a child’s handwriting has been developed adequately it will be assessed. If it fulfils the criteria the child will then be awarded a pen licence.

We would like to encourage children in Foundation and KS1 to develop their handwriting too. We therefore want to award children with a sparkly pencil licence. This licence will mean that the child has the privilege of using their special sparkly pencil to complete all of their work.

A sparkly pencil will be awarded if:
• Letters are correctly formed
• Short letters are the same size
• The majority of ascenders and descenders are the right height/length
• Capital letters are bigger than lower case
• Spaces between letters are the right size (not too squashed or stretched)
• Spaces between words are the right size (not to small or big)
• Work looks neat
• The licence can be removed by the teacher if the child’s handwriting deteriorates.
