Pen Licence - Key Stage 2

We would like to encourage children in KS2 to develop their handwriting further after their sparkly pencil licence in KS1.

When a teacher considers a child’s joined handwriting has been developed adequately it will be assessed. If it fulfils the criteria the child will then be awarded a pen licence.

This licence will mean that the child has the privilege of using their pen to complete all of their work.
A pen will be awarded if:
• All letters are joined correctly
• All letters are correctly formed
• All short letters are the same size
• All ascenders and descenders are clear
• All ascenders and descenders are vertical, not sloping
• Capital letters are the correct height
• Work is consistently well presented
• The licence can be removed by the teacher if the child’s handwriting deteriorates.
